Description

This composition for the saxophone quartet is written in jazz styles but doesn't require improvisational skills from the performers. However, the players should be familiar with jazz phrasing and articulation. The concept behind the work is that for each of the different saxophones in the quartet, there is one legendary jazz musician, whose style is featured in a particular movement. The first movement is written in the fast bebop style of alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, while the second presents itself in a cool West Coast manner of baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. John Coltrane also played soprano saxophone - the instrument that is featured in an up-tempo modal jazz waltz as the third movement. Famous tenor jazz saxophonist Stan Getz experimented with Latin music in the 1960s and is portrayed in the last fast samba movement of the suite.
